In Conversation With Briana Marela

In this interview, Briana and I discuss the full scope of her innovative music career. From her MFA from Mills College to her time as an artist on Jagjaguwar, we cover it all.

Briana Marela is a Peruvian American composer, vocalist, engineer, producer, and performing artist. Throughout her decade-plus-long music career, she’s toured extensively across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Some notable folks she’s toured with for those shows included Waxahatchee, Emel Mathlouthi, and Jenny Hval.

The Seattle-based experimental artist has collaborated with several prestigious entertainment publications and institutions, including Billboard and Vogue. Moreover, she has also worked with NPR’s Radiolab to make a song about the 4th amendment

The genre-bending musician is a visionary artist who deconstructs pop music, music in general, and sound down to their bare bones, all the way to the instruments artists use to record music.

Some of the awards and grants Marela has received include the following: Allied Arts Foundation Grant recipient, American Association of University Women (AAUW) Career Development Grant recipient

Education: Bachelor of Arts from Evergreen State College, MFA from Mills College
